About Us

A Legacy of Integrity and Vision

Moab Premier Properties is built on a legacy of real estate excellence spanning four generations. What began as a shared vision between founders Tom Shellenberger and Janie Tuft has evolved into a trusted name in development, management, and brokerage services throughout the region.

Tom launched his real estate career in Park City, playing an active role in its transformation from a quiet mountain town into a thriving community. Janie, a Moab native, has dedicated her life to real estate in the area, bringing unmatched local knowledge and a lifelong commitment to her clients. Together, they built Moab Premier on the foundations of expertise, hard work, and a strong ethical compass.

The brokerage was later led by Bryon Walston, whose leadership further elevated the firm. Bryon played a key role in brokering several of the region’s most notable transactions and quietly impacted many lives through his generosity and guidance. His passing from cancer marked a profound loss, both personally and professionally. Today, his legacy continues under the stewardship of his son, Preston Walston.

Preston and his family recently faced the difficult loss of their father and mentor. Bryon’s example of faith, service, and unwavering dedication left a lasting impact on all who knew him—especially his children. Inspired by this legacy, Preston is stepping forward to carry the torch, committed to advancing the values that have defined Moab Premier since its inception.

At Moab Premier, we believe in thoughtful growth—growth that supports our community while honoring its unique character. We advocate for sustainable development, affordable housing, tourism, short-term rentals, trailer parks, and other essential elements that contribute to a balanced and thriving local economy.

Our team-oriented approach is at the heart of everything we do. Real estate is not a solo endeavor, and our collaborative mindset has allowed us to broker some of the most influential and complex transactions in the Moab region.

Among our proudest accomplishments is facilitating the sale and preservation of some of the largest conservation parcels in the area—landmarks that many in the community will recognize and appreciate.

THE NEEDLES OUTPOST PRESERVATION SALE

Nature View From Above The Needles Outpost

The Needles Outpost: A Commitment to Conservation

The Needles Outpost is a modest and welcoming campground located just outside Canyonlands National Park. Operated by close friends with a deep appreciation for the land, it offers visitors a unique and authentic experience in the heart of Utah’s red rock country.

When the property was listed for auction, it attracted interest from large-scale developers with plans that threatened to alter the area's natural character. Moab Premier Properties proudly represented a buyer whose vision aligned with preservation. Following the sale, the parcel was deeded to The Nature Conservancy, ensuring that this remarkable landscape will remain protected for future generations.

ARROYO CROSSING

ARROYO CROSSING COMMUNITY PLAT FOR DEVELOPMENT

Arroyo Crossing: A Vision for Affordable Housing in Moab

The idea for Arroyo Crossing began as a collaborative concept between local brokers and their client: to address the critical need for affordable housing in Moab by removing one of its largest barriers—land cost. Recognizing that land prices in the area make homeownership nearly unattainable for many local residents, the vision was to donate land specifically for permanently affordable housing.

In 2017, the Moab Area Community Land Trust (MACLT) was established and received a generous land donation designated exclusively for the development of affordable housing. This site, now known as Arroyo Crossing, is located in Moab’s Spanish Valley.

In 2019, MACLT was awarded $4.3 million in New Market Tax Credits to fund vital infrastructure improvements required for Phase 1 of the project, which includes 248 residential units and one community building. The full master plan envisions a total of 300 homes and three community facilities. New roadways created through this initiative will also provide a crucial link between US-191 and Spanish Valley Drive, enhancing local transportation connectivity.

Horizontal (infrastructure) construction began in 2020, and by late 2021, vertical construction of homes was underway. By 2022, the first residents—many of whom have long worked multiple jobs to support the Moab community—began moving into homes they could finally call their own.

This transformative project was made possible by the dedication and collaboration of the MACLT team, who donated their time, energy, and expertise to make the dream of homeownership a reality for local families. This project may change generations of Moabites...

Supporting a Balanced Local Economy

While often a topic of debate, hotels and short-term rental lodging play an important role in supporting Moab’s economic stability. These developments create steady employment opportunities and generate additional funding that can be directed toward employee housing and other community needs.

Moab Premier Properties has contributed to this economic foundation by facilitating key land transactions, including the site that was ultimately developed into a hotel and the Wyndham timeshare property. These projects reflect our commitment to fostering sustainable growth that benefits both residents and visitors alike.
